CAMPAIGN 2007-08 ISSUES / SURVEY

  • John McCain for President - voters want a strong president with personal values and convictions worthy of respect, character, consistency and candor. Some body strong, who commands respect in other countries. A president who represents all Americans not select few.
  • Congress - voters want a Congress prepared to act effectively on the problems of health care, education and family issues most Americans think Washington has been neglecting.
  • Deep Public Skepticism - about a political system voters see dominated by naked partisanship and campaign cash.
  • Health Care - single greatest concern from a list of 51 possible worries - is that insurance companies are making decisions about medical care that doctors and patients should be making.
  • Three other issues were also cited as causes of worry:
    1. that elderly Americans will be unable to afford prescription drugs,
    2. that medical benefits will be reduced or eliminated by employers, and
    3. that number of uninsured Americans will rise.
  • Education - three of the 12 top voter concerns involve education: 1) safety in the classrooms, 2) the expense of college education and 3) overall quality of the school system. Crime, drugs and environmental pollution have slipped from the top positions they held in a similar study eight years ago.
  • Family Issue - a new family issue that work-related time pressures keep parents away from their children.
  • Economic Issue - a new economic issue has emerged as of great concern to even half the people: the fear that good jobs will be moved overseas, leaving the dregs for U. S. workers

Some Burning Issues

  • Immigration reforms
  • Re-evaluating export and import controls
  • Implementing national education standards
  • Technology in schools
  • Permanent research and development tax credit for computer and medical industries
  • Hands off the Internet, no taxes
  • Protection of investors and entrepreneur rights
  • Patent reforms
  • Reduction in capital gain tax rate and elimination of estate tax

My Positions on Important Issues

Transportation - would help Bay Area Planners craft a coordinated plan to relieve traffic congestions - favor expansion of ferry service - build Mass Rapid Transit systems and extension of BART all around the San Francisco Bay Area connecting surrounding counties - favor connecting San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose airports by helicopter service - favor BART Tube extension connecting three major Bay Area airports - favor telecommuting - favor developing alternate fuels.

Education/Child Care -giving parents the right to choose public schools, private schooling or tutoring - extra federal money for states that improve schools - more money for charter schools - $5000 in tax-free education savings accounts - stringent teacher testing - tax credits for child care - forgive 60,000 college student loans - reduce the class size to 20.

Defense/Foreign Policy - more money in R & D for weapons research - raise military salaries - build missile defense system - balanced foreign policy.

Environment - No offshore drilling - cut greenhouse gases and air pollution - develop alternative fuels - build mass rapid transportation systems - more parks.

Health Care/Medicare - favor adding prescription drug benefit - health coverage through medical savings accounts - tax incentives to small businesses - full tax deduction for self-employed and long-term care - affordable health coverage for children and adults in low-to-middle income families.

Social Security - favor lock box to assure any surplus could not be shifted to other programs - favor investing in private investment part of social security tax - allow younger workers the option of investing majority of their payroll tax in private investments.

Federal Budget/Taxes/Economy - stop federal pork - eliminate wasteful, mismanaged and unnecessary programs - reform budget process - cut payroll tax rate - simplify tax code - favor $1 increase in minimum wage - favor free and balanced trade - eliminate marriage penalty - eliminate estate tax.

Regulation/Small Business - small businesses, the economic engine of America, are burdened by regulations, it costs 800 billion dollars or more per year - reduce unnecessary regulations.

Immigration & Border Security - We need a fair and balanced immigration policy that secures our borders, keeps the criminals and terrorists away, encourages immigrants to understand our culture and speak the English language, and promotes education and technical skills needed for a strong economy.

In order to maintain our leadership role in the world, as most of our top economists agree that we have to retain the technological superiority by investing in educating our youths and encourage entry of educated foreigners.

Winning War on Terror - We must eradicate religious extremism by promoting inter-faith education, establishing direct contacts  with the people rather than governments in poor countries by building schools, provides health care facilities, and builds small businesses that creates job opportunities.

Energy Independence - We need a policy that encourages development of alternative fuels to get rid of oil for ever.
